Election 2014

Listen to Dutra's comment on how to become a Councilman. No wonder we cannot get rid of them.

Subject Line:  Whittier Voting Rights Issue

Dear Friend and Supporter:

As you know, I have qualified to run for City Council in the upcoming election. If the incumbent Bob Henderson wins this election, oil drilling in the Whittier Hills may remain a certainty in our near future.

You may have noticed that support for oil drilling in the current council is unanimous.  The Whittier Latino Coalition has filed suit in Superior Court to stop Bob Henderson’s and his cronies’ re-election.  The suit asks the court to establish districts so that a more diverse-thinking council may be elected.

A trial of this matter is set to occur in March 2014. If the coalition succeeds in this lawsuit, the likelihood of removing current incumbent council members is substantially increased.  Removing council members is crucial in the fight to protect the Whittier Hills.

The City Council moved to freeze the coalitions’ lawsuit, so the city can ask voters to keep the current voting system. This vote is a sham because it will occur under the same unfair system that keeps the current city council in office. I join the coalition in opposing the city’s efforts to keep business as usual.

Whittier has asked the court to postpone the lawsuit until after the voters have decided to keep the current election system.  This is a political move designed to undermine the court’s authority to order a fair election process in Whittier.  The Whittier Voters’ Coalition is opposing Whittier’s request on January 31, 2014.

Please join me in supporting the lawsuit filed by the Whittier Latino Coalition by attending the hearing on January 31, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. in the Los Angeles Superior Court located at 111 N. Hill Street in Department 56 of that court.  The coalition is caravaning from Michigan Park on the morning of the hearing.  The caravan will leave promptly at 7:00 a.m.  Blue shirts/tops in any shade may be worn by supporters.

Two large vans are available to transport persons to and from the park.  In addition, you may take the Gold Line from the Atlantic station, but will have to take other transportation from Union Station to the courthouse.  In addition, you may drive.  The public must clear security when entering the courthouse, which can cause delay in getting into the court, so arrive at the courthouse by 8:00 a.m. if possible.

I hope you can join in supporting this effort.
